A viral social media post (here, here) claims that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has circulated specific phone numbers for reporting suspicious activities by Muslims. The post alleges that these activities include “terrorist plots,” “love jihad,” “shrine construction,” and certain social media posts. It further claims that if a Muslim individual is seen chanting “sar tan se juda” online, users should take a screenshot and send it to the provided WhatsApp number to alert the NIA. Let’s verify the claim made in the post in this article.

Claim: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has issued helpline numbers for the public to report suspicious Muslims.
Fact: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has not issued any helpline numbers to report suspicious Muslims. The numbers mentioned in the viral post are genuine control-room numbers of the agency’s Delhi headquarters, but they were never released for monitoring Muslims. NIA and PIB Fact Check have repeatedly clarified in the past that such claims are fake and malicious. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
To verify the claim, we conducted a Google keyword search using relevant terms but found no reports supporting the claim that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has issued helpline numbers for the public to report suspicious Muslims.
We then went through the NIA’s official website and found that the numbers mentioned in the viral post do appear in the “Contact Us” section as genuine control-room numbers of the agency’s Delhi headquarters. However, these numbers were not issued for the purpose claimed in the viral post.

We also reviewed the press release section of the NIA website and found no recent press release stating that the agency has issued helpline numbers for the public to report suspicious Muslims. The last time the NIA released a public contact number was in May 2025 for the Pahalgam terror attack probe. That appeal was directed at tourists, visitors, and locals, asking them to share any photos, videos, or information related to the attack. There was no reference to Muslims or any of the claims made in the viral post.
Earlier, when a similar claim went viral, an X post by PIB Fact Check dated 23 June 2023 clarified that the post was misleading. PIB stated that although the numbers belong to the NIA, the agency has not issued any advisory asking people to report Muslims or alleged slogans.
NIA itself had earlier issued a clarification through an X post and a press note in July 2022. The press note stated that the agency had not launched any such helpline and that messages referring to Muslims were “completely fake and malicious.” It also clarified that the numbers circulating in the public domain were meant for reporting suspicious information related to ISIS activities. In 2021, the NIA had appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity on 011-24368800, but there was no reference to the Muslim community.
To sum up, the NIA has not issued any helpline numbers to report suspicious Muslims; the viral post is fake.
