A video is being shared on social media claiming that an immigration officer is stealing money from a passenger during an immigration check. Many X (Twitter), Facebook users have also shared this video. Through this article let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: Video showing an immigration officer stealing passengers’ money and luggage.
Fact: The video is scripted, and the individuals featured in it can be observed playing various roles in other videos released by a YouTube channel, PaulVuTV. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
On performing a reverse image search on Google using a keyframe from the viral video, we found that the video was uploaded to a YouTube channel PaulVuTV on 02 November 2023, with the title “Greedy employee takes from passenger!”.
Upon examining the channel, we discovered that it regularly uploads scripted videos. Most of the videos featured on the channel showcase the same actors who appear in the viral videos. Some other videos of them acting can be found here, here, here, and here.
During our search, we found that CNN Philippines, NDTV World, The Hindu, India Today and others reported many incidents regarding theft of passengers’ luggage and money by employees at various airports. However, as explained above, the video shared in the original post is a scripted one.
To sum it up, a scripted video depicting an immigration officer stealing money from a passenger is being shared as a real incident.
