From 1954 to 2018, a total of 225 civilian awards (Padma Awards & Bharat Ratna) were given to Sportspersons. Cricketers won 55 of these awards which is 25% of all the awards. The only Bharat Ratna to a sportsperson was conferred on Sachin Tendulkar. 34 awards went to Mountaineers while 25 went to Hockey players.
