On 22 December 2024, a small plane crashed in Gramado, Brazil, killing all 10 passengers, including Brazilian businessman Luiz Claudio Galeazzi and his family (here, here and here). The plane hit a home chimney, a building, and a mobile phone shop in a residential area, injuring over a dozen people. Amid this, a video (here and here) surfaced on social media showing a plane crashing in the sky, with claims that it is from the Brazilian incident. Let’s verify the truth behind this video.

The archived post can be found here.

Claim: The plane crashing in the sky in this video is from the recent Brazil plane crash in 2024.

Fact: The video actually shows a plane crash from an earlier incident in the US, specifically from the Thunder Over Michigan air show on 13 August 2023. It has no connection to the recent 2024 plane crash in Brazil. Hence, the claim is MISLEADING.

To verify the truth behind the video, we conducted a reverse image search on Google, which led us to a post on the X handle “Disclose TV.” The same video was shared on 14 August 2023, with the caption: “NOW – MiG-23 aircraft crashes during an air show in Michigan.”

Further verification through a YouTube search revealed the full video uploaded by the Daily Mail channel on 14 August 2023, with the caption: “Moment MiG-23 fighter plane crashes during Michigan airshow causing huge explosion.” The video shows the plane’s occupants escaping with parachutes before the plane crashes to the ground. This confirms that the video is not related to the recent Brazilian plane crash.

A deep dive into the incident reveals several details from multiple sources (here, here and here). According to reports from BBC and MLive, on 13 August 2023, during the Thunder Over Michigan air show in Belleville, Michigan, a MiG-23UB fighter jet crashed after engine trouble forced its two occupants, pilot Daniel Filer and his co-pilot, to eject at low altitude. The jet collided with unoccupied vehicles and shops, causing a fireball, but no injuries were reported on the ground. The pilots were safely recovered and treated for minor injuries. However, this video has no connection with the recent plane accident in Brazil.

To sum up, an old video of a plane crash from the US is shared as a recent incident from Brazil.
