1

A post with a photo of police thrashing a girl on the road is being widely shared on Facebook claiming that it shows Assam Police atrocities on the public. Let’s analyze the authenticity of the claim.

The archived version of the post can be found here.

Claim: Image of Assam Police atrocities on the public.

Fact: The image is that of Uttar Pradesh police beating a demonstrator, who was demanding justice to the deceased ‘Unnao rape victim’, during protests in Lucknow. So, the claim is FALSE.

The image is being shared in the context of the recent protests in Assam against the  Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019. The bill seeks to provide Indian citizenship to specific religious groups facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

When the image in the post is subjected to Google reverse image search technique, many search results of it were obtained. From the article of ‘Asianet News’, it was found that the image shows Uttar Pradesh police beating a demonstrator during protests in Lucknow demanding justice to the deceased ‘Unnao rape victim’. So, the image is in no way related to any incident in Assam.

The same information about the photograph can also be seen in the ‘Free Press Journal’ article.

To summarize, an image of UP police beating a demonstrator during protests demanding justice to the deceased ‘Unnao rape victim’ is being shared with a false narrative.
