Digitally created video shared as real incident of satellite falling on ground during a reels shoot

A video is being shared on social media, which claims to be a clip of a satellite falling on the ground while someone was shooting an Instagram reel. Let’s fact-check this video through this article.

Claim: Visuals of a satellite falling on ground from the sky during an Instagram reel shoot.

Fact: This video is digitally created using an existing green screen overlay. Similar such videos have existed on the internet for a very long time, and all of them feature the same satellite clip falling at different locations. Hence the claim made is FALSE.

We searched the internet with relevant keywords to check for news reports related to such an incident in India. Except for reports (here, here and here) from April 2022 about parts of a satellite that have fallen from the sky in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, we did not find any relevant information about a satellite falling from the sky, which got captured on a camera during an Instagram reel shoot. If such an incident really took place, the media would have widely reported the same.

Searching the Internet with relevant keywords led us to videos featuring the same Satellite in the viral video. Videos with titles like ‘Space satellite falls into residential area, ‘Satellite falls to the ground in Michigan‘, ‘Satellite drop VFX SHOTS ’are available on Youtube, and many such videos exist on the internet (here and here), some of these are from 2014.

This video is created using an editing technique called ChromaKey, a video tutorial of how such videos can be made using a stock green screen video is available on YouTube; you may watch it here.

To sum up, a digitally created video is shared as a real satellite falling on the ground during a reels shoot.
