Cyclone Tauktae visuals are passed off as cyclone Yaas from West Bengal

In view of the very severe cyclone named Yaas which is set to hit the east coast, particularly Odisha and West Bengal, a social media post with a video is being shared on social media. The video shows waves engulfing houses along the shore and it is being claimed that the video shows the present situation in West Bengal’s Digha. Through this article, let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video showing the present situation in West Bengal’s Digha due to cyclone Yaas.

Fact: This video actually shows visuals of cyclone Tauktae from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala earlier this month. While it is true that Digha is facing high tides and heavy winds due to cyclone Yaas, this video is not related to cyclone Yaas. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

This video is not related to cyclone Yaas. Google search with relevant keywords led us to an India Today news report regarding the recent cyclone Tauktae earlier this month. The report carried the same visuals as in the post. According to the report, the video shows visuals related to cyclone Tauktae from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. More visuals of cyclone Tauktae from Kerala can be seen here.

It is true that Digha in particular is facing high tides with strong winds as cyclone Yaas is expected to make landfall along the east coast of West Bengal & Odisha. However, the video in the post is not related to Digha and cyclone Yaas.

To sum it up, cyclone Tauktae visuals from Kerala earlier this month are passed off as cyclone Yaas from West Bengal.
