A video (here and here) allegedly from Kashmir, which shows flooded streets and people being rescued, has gone viral on social media. It is being claimed that these visuals are from the recent Kashmir floods (here and here). We fact-check this claim through this article.
Claim: This video shows the visuals of flood-affected Kashmir from 2024.
Fact: This video is from 2014 when Kashmir was affected by floods. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.
To check the veracity of the viral claim, we performed a keyword search on the internet. This search did not yield any credible information linking this video to the 2024 Kashmir floods.
However, we found a YouTube video uploaded to the official verified channel of the Associated Press, which is the original version of the viral video.
This video titled ‘Raw: Deadly Flooding in India’ was uploaded on 4 September 2014. According to the description of the video, the visuals show devastating floods that hit Kashmir in 2014 caused by heavy rains. Additionally, Livemint reported on 30 April 2024 that ‘the threat of floods in Kashmir subsided on Tuesday.’
To sum up, a decade-old video of the Kashmir floods is falsely being shared as the visuals of the 2024 Kashmir floods.`
