A viral video (here and here) on social media shows two children crying by the side of a man allegedly named Netram Kushwa. It is being claimed that Netram and his family members were brutally assaulted by a few miscreants ‘this morning at 6 am, in Jalalabad, Uttar Pradesh’ (various posts from January 2025 make this claim.) Some of these posts even claim that when Netram was taken to the police station, the police did not pay attention and left him at the gates of the police station. We fact-check this claim through this article.
Claim: A man named Netram and his family members were brutally assaulted by miscreants recently (on 24 January 2025) in Jalalabad, Uttar Pradesh.
Fact: This video is from May 2018 of an incident that took place in Jalalabad, Uttar Pradesh. Netram had a fight with his family members during which he hit his Nephew with a shovel, resulting in his death. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.
To check the veracity of the claim, we performed a reverse image search using a few of the keyframes from the viral video and found many similar social media posts. On a few such posts on ‘X,’ the Shahjahanpur police posted a note stating that the claim that the incident seen in the video happened on 24 January 2025 is false and baseless (here, here, and here). They said nothing like this took place that day in Jalalabad, Shahjahanpur, UP.
In a detailed note, they mentioned that the Sub-Inspector of Jalalabad police station investigated this video and found it to be related to an incident that took place in 2018. Police found that this video is related to a fight between a person named Ranveer (his son) and two people named Madan Pal and Netram. This incident took place in Etmadpur, Jalalabad, Shahjahanpur, UP. During this fight, Netram hit Raveer’s son, Saroj Kumar, with a shovel, resulting in his death. A police case was registered with FIR number 230/2018, and the accused were arrested and sent to jail.
Through a further search on the internet using relevant keywords, we found a few Facebook posts from May 2018 (here and here) that contained the viral video, making it clear that this video is old and was not shot in January 2025.
Additionally, we also found (based on FIR No. 230/2018) a judgment related to a bail application in the District and Session court in this regard. In the judgment where the bail application of Madan Pal, the co-accused, was rejected, the whole series of events was mentioned, which matched the details posted by the Shajahanpur police on ‘X.’
Back in May 2018, Amar Ujala published a news report on this incident, saying that both parties are related to each other. Netram Kushwah is the maternal uncle of the deceased Saroj Kumar.
To sum up, an old video from 2018 is shared as a recent incident of a man named Netram Kushwa attacked by goons in Uttar Pradesh.
