A social media post features a video that allegedly shows the crowd chanting ‘India India’ as the US Republican Vice President nominee J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, made their entry at the Republican National Convention (here and here). We fact-check this claim through this article.

Claim: Video shows crowd chanting ‘India India’ during the entry of J.D. Vance and Usha Chilukuri Vance at the 2024 RNC Convention.

Fact: This is an edited video. In the original clip, we can hear a song in the background and not the ‘India India’ chants as seen in the viral clip. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

To check the veracity of the viral claim, we searched online with relevant keywords, looking for news reports or footage related to the 2024 Republican National Convention. This led us to the video reports and live streams related to this event, uploaded by major news organisations (here and here) on YouTube.

Visuals seen in the viral video can be found here and here in the live streams of the RNC’s day 1 by the Associated Press and Forbes, respectively.

The clip shows (here and here) J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance, walking towards the stage after J.D. Vance’s name as the Republican Vice President candidate was announced by the Attorney General of Iowa, Brenna Bird.

After the announcement, a band plays a song as the couple walks towards the stage, greeting the crowd.

Nowhere in this entire episode do we hear people chanting ‘India India.’ This makes it clear that the viral video was created by adding the audio of the ‘India India’ chants to this small portion of the event.

To sum up, the viral video of the crowd at the RNC chanting ‘India India’ at the entry of J.D. Vance and Usha Vance has been digitally edited.
