A video of floods in Morocco is shared as it’s from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu

A video of cars being washed away by floods is being shared on social media claiming that the incident took place in Thutukoodi district of Tamil Nadu. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: The visuals depict cars being washed away due to floods in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.

Fact: The visuals show flood situation in Morocco in July 2023. News channels reported on this video, indicating that it depicts events in Morocco during flash floods. Besides, tamil voices were digitally added to the viral video and shared. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

Due to cyclonic circulation, the district of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu recently experienced floods (here and here). Amidst this, a video went viral on social media, claiming to depict the flood situation in Thoothukudi.

On conducting a reverse image search using the keyframes of the video, we found that this video is recently being shared, claiming it occurred in different parts of Tamil Nadu (here, here, and here). However, we discovered that the same video was featured on the X handle of Disaster News in July 2023 with the title, ‘The massive floods due to heavy rain in Moulay Brahim of Al Haouz, Morocco.’

In subsequent research, we found that this video is featured on the Instagram page of Morocco World News with the caption, ‘Heavy rainfall resulted in flooding in Moulay Brahim, a small town in the Al Haouz province.’ Additionally, news channels reported on this video, indicating that it depicts events in Morocco during flash floods in 2023 (here and here).  Moreover, it is evident that Tamil voices were digitally added to the viral video and shared.

To sum up, a video of floods in Morocco with edited Tamil voices is shared as it’s from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
