A viral video (here, here, and here) on social media shows a man, allegedly a muslim, attacking a Hindu man with a sword. The video, which seems to be a CCTV recording of this alleged incident, is being shared with a claim that this incident happened in West Bengal. We will fact-check this claim through this article.

An archived version of this post can be found here.

Claim: CCTV footage of a Muslim man attacking a Hindu man with a sword in West Bengal.

Fact: This video is of an incident that took place on 11 August 2025 in Punjab, not West Bengal. The attacker is not a Muslim; his name is Surinder Singh, and the victim is a lawyer named Kultar Singh. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

To check the veracity of the claim, we performed a reverse image search on a few keyframes from the viral video. This search led us to news reports (here, here, here, here, and here) about this incident. According to these reports, the incident took place in Punjab, not West Bengal, as claimed in the viral posts.

Kultar alleged that the accused has been a drug addict, creating a nuisance and hurling abuses outside their house for the past few days. ASI Davinder Singh, who is investigating the case, said that an FIR under Sections 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 127(1) (wrongful confinement) and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered and the accused arrested” Hindustan Times reported

Jansatta reported that the neighbours state that Surinder Singh is a drug addict and has quarrelled with the victim several times in the past. To learn more details about this incident, we accessed the FIR copy of the case filed in the Samrala police station. The FIR also states the names of the attacker and the victim as Billu alias Surinder Singh and Kultar Singh, respectively. All of this evidence makes it clear that the attacker is not a Muslim, contrary to the claim made in the viral posts. We also reached out ot the local police officials who confirmed that there is no communal angle to the incident.

To sum up, a video of a man named Surinder Singh attacking his neighbour named Kultar Singh, in Punjab’s Samrala, is being shared with a false communal narrative.
