A video of a man spitting on food is being shared on social media (here, here and here) with claims that even Hindus have started spitting in food. In the video, the person filming can be heard mentioning that a Hindu man is spitting while cooking. We’ve also received several requests on our WhatsApp tipline to verify the accuracy of this viral claim.
Claim: A Hindu person is seen spitting on rotis while making it.
Fact: According to various news reports and an FIR, the incident occurred in Tattari town, Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh. The employee involved is named Shahzad, who is Muslim, not Hindu. Additionally, the shop is named Naresh. Hence, the claim is MISLEADING.
To verify the claim, we conducted a keyword search on Google, which led us to an ETV report from 26 September 2024. The report included the viral video and mentioned that the incident took place in Tattari town, Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh. The shop is named Naresh, while the employee seen in the video is identified as Shahzad, a Muslim.
We also found a news video from Zee TV on YouTube, dated 26 September 2024, which also mentions that the employee’s name is Mohammed.
Furthermore, we accessed a copy of the FIR from the UP Police website, which also identifies the accused employee as Shahzad.
To sum up, a video of a roti maker spitting on the roti is falsely attributed to a Hindu employee.
