A video of a family dispute among Hindus in Bangladesh is being shared with a false communal claim

A violent video (here, here, and here) is doing the rounds on social media, which allegedly shows ‘radical extremists’ attacking three Hindus in Bangladesh. It is being claimed that this happened in Chandaya Village, Kaliganj Upazila, Gazipur District, due to a dispute over cows. The post’s description reads, ‘Religious and ethnic minority families are fighting for their lives. Human rights are being violated. The victimized families are terrified, worried and suffering from insecurity.’ We will fact-check this claim through this article.

Claim: Video of three Hindus being attacked by ‘radical extremists’ in Bangladesh due to a dispute over a cow.

Fact: As per news reports and Bangladeshi police, this incident is related to a land dispute among the members of a family in Kaliganj. All those involved in the dispute belong to the Hindu community, and there is no communal angle to the incident. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

To check the veracity of the claim, we performed a keyword search on the internet using Bangla text. This search led us to a news report published on 31 March 2025 by the Bangladeshi media outlet ‘Desh Rupantor.’ The location details of this incident mentioned in the news report match with the viral claim which said that this happened in  Chandaya Village, Kaliganj Upazila, Gazipur District.

As per this report, ‘a cousin injured another cousin with an axe over a property dispute in Chandaiya village of Ward 6 of Kaliganj Municipality in Gazipur.’ The attackers and victims belong to the Hindu community, as per the names given in the report.

Reportedly, ‘On Sunday (March 30), Ramcharan and his son Jhantu Das attacked their cousins ​​Narayan, Giribala and Haradhan Chandra Das with axes in Kaliganj due to a previous enmity over land.

As per these reports, the incident happened when Narayan went to cut kachuripana in the pond next to his house to feed his cows. Seeing this, Ramcharan and his son abused him. This later escalated to Ramcharan attacking Narayan with an axe. 

During this search, we also found a Facebook post by the Bangladeshi Police on this incident. They took to their official verified Facebook page and stated that a complaint was raised by one Lipi Rani Das, based on which they arrested the accused. They said that a false communal angle is being given to this incident and urged people to be vigilant in preventing rumours. 

During this search, we also found a news report published by Ekushey News on 31 March 2025 regarding this incident. As per this report, the daughter of the victim, Narayan Chandra Das, Lipi Chandra Das, told the media that Ramcharan and his son Jhantu Das attacked Narayan when he was cutting grass on his private land. After this attack, Narayan is reportedly fighting for his life in Dhaka Medical College Hospital. 

Additionally, we found a Facebook post made by Shohanur Rahman, a fact checker at the Bangladeshi fact-checking organisation Rumour Scanner. In this post, he clarified that both parties belong to the Hindu community.
