A video showing a man brutally assaulting and abusing a woman is going viral on social media (here, here, and here). In the video, a few women nearby are seen attempting to intervene, but the man continues the assault. The video is being shared with the claim that the woman is a Hindu and the man assaulting her is her Muslim husband. Let’s verify the claim made in the post in this article.

Fact: The video shows a domestic violence incident between a Muslim couple in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. Both the man and the woman are Muslims by birth. Hapur Police have confirmed there is no communal angle, and that legal action has been initiated against those spreading misinformation. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to an X post (archived) dated 19 June 2025 by India News UP/UK, which reported on the same video. According to the details provided in the post, the incident took place in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, and the man and the woman seen in the video are husband and wife.

We searched using relevant keywords and found a 26 June 2025 X post (archived) by Hapur Police. The post clarified that the viral video shows a domestic dispute between a Muslim couple, falsely being portrayed as a Hindu-Muslim issue on social media platforms (X/Twitter, Instagram, etc.). The man assaulting the woman is her husband, and both are Muslims by birth. The incident occurred about one and a half months ago, and a case was registered under relevant sections at Hapur Nagar Police Station. A chargesheet has already been filed in court. The couple is now living together by mutual consent. The police added that a case has been registered against those spreading communal misinformation, and efforts are underway to identify others sharing such posts for legal action. Hapur Police has completely refuted the communal claims associated with the video.

We contacted Senior Inspector Narendra of Hapur Police Station for more information. He denied any communal angle in the case and confirmed that the video shows a domestic dispute between a Muslim couple. The woman had filed a complaint against her husband for domestic violence at the Hapur Police Station on 05 January 2025. However, the couple has since reconciled and is now living together. He refrained from disclosing their identities, stating that both belong to the Muslim community and the incident should not be viewed through a communal lens.
