A protest video of milk farmers throwing away milk on the road is falsely shared as Kanwariyas altercation with milk vendors

The month of Sawan began with the Kanwar Yatra on 11 July 2025. Since then, there were isolated reports of Kanwariyas allegedly causing traffic disruptions and vandalising vehicles. Amid this, a video (here and here) went viral on social media showing people throwing away milk on a road. It is claimed that Kanwariyas did this following a dispute with a milk vendor. Let’s find the truth behind this video.

The archived post can be found here.

Claim: The viral video shows Kanwariyas spilling milk on the road during the Kanwar Yatra, after an altercation with a milk vendor.

Fact: The video actually shows a protest by milk farmers in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district demanding a hike in milk prices. This has nothing to do with the Kanwar Yatra or Kanwariyas. Hence the claim is FALSE.

To investigate the claim, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to the same video uploaded by Punjab Kesari Haryana on 20 July 2025. According to the caption, the incident occurred in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district, where milk-producing farmers were protesting by throwing away milk on the roads, demanding a hike in milk prices. Several other handles across different platforms also shared the video, identifying it as a protest in Gujarat (here, here and here). This suggests that the video is likely unrelated to the Kanwar Yatra.

Further search revealed multiple media reports covering the incident, which included keyframes of viral video (here, here and here). These reports confirm that cattle farmers in Sabarkantha protested against Sabar Dairy for not increasing milk prices. As a form of protest, they threw away milk on the roads. The situation escalated on 14 July 2025, with violent clashes at Sabar Dairy, damage to property, and stone-pelting. Police responded with tear gas. FIRs were filed against 74 individuals, including former MLA Jasubhai Patel, and 47 people were detained. Farmers cited the rising cost of fodder and inflation as key reasons for their demands. The protest disrupted milk supply in rural areas, sparking concerns about dairy production and economic losses.

We also conducted a keyword search using terms like “Kanwariyas,” “Kanwar Yatra,” and references to milk vendors. This search yielded no relevant results. It confirms that the viral video has no connection to the Kanwar Yatra or Kanwariyas and instead shows a farmers’ protest in Gujarat.

To sum up, a protest video of Gujarat milk farmers throwing away milk on the road is falsely shared as Kanwariyas altercation with milk vendors.
