A video is being shared on social media (here, here, and here) claiming that it shows a Hindu man killed by slitting his throat in front of everyone at the Eidgah gate in Kauria Para, Narsingdi district, Bangladesh. Let’s verify this claim in this article.
Claim: Video shows a Hindu man who was killed by slitting his throat in public in Narsingdi, Bangladesh.
Fact: The incident in the video took place on 01 October 2024 and the victim is identified as Hanif. Hanif was attacked around 2:30 PM at Eidgaon in Kawriapara by his cousins, Naeem and Nadeem. They assaulted him with Chinese axes and then fatally stabbed him. The incident was believed to be revenge for the death of Naeem and Nadeem’s father, Habib Ullah, who was killed by Hanif’s younger brother, Babu, during a family dispute. News reports and videos confirmed Hanif’s identity, and there is no communal angle to the murder. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.
A reverse image search of the keyframes of the viral video led to a tweet dated 04 October 2024, featuring the same image. The caption of the tweet reads A man named Hanif Mia, a Muslim, was recently killed in Narsingdi due to past enmity.
Taking a clue from the tweet, a Google keyword search led us to multiple media reports (here, here, and here) about the incident. According to these reports, on 01 October 2024, the deceased was attacked around 2:30 PM at Eidgaon in Kawriapara by his cousins, Naeem and Nadeem. They assaulted him with Chinese axes and, when he fell, fatally stabbed him with a sharp knife before fleeing the scene. The police and decreased family revealed that Naeem and Nadeem are the sons of the Habib Ullah, who was killed by deceased’s younger brother about a month and a half earlier during a family dispute. The police believe that the murder of Hanif was an act of revenge for Habib Ullah’s death.
We also found a news report of the same incident that confirmed the location, which was identical to that depicted in the viral video.
We also found a video of a relative of the deceased who confirmed that the man was named Hanif. The cousin explained the reason for the murder, saying that Hanif’s younger brother, Babu, had killed their uncle, Habu Mia, about a month and a half ago. While burying Habu, his sons, Naeem and Nadeem, promised to take revenge on their father’s killer within 40 days. We believe that Naeem and Nadeem killed Hanif today.
Sohrab Hossain, sub-inspector of Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station, said that the body was recovered and sent to the morgue for postmortem. After the autopsy, legal action will be taken based on the family’s complaint.
To sum up, a Muslim youth’s murder in Bangladesh, due to personal enmity, is being falsely shared with a communal angle.
