The Waqf Amendment Bill has been passed in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In this context, a video (here, here and here) has gone viral on social media showing Priyanka Gandhi in a black dress, surrounded by police officers as she appears to be participating in a protest. It is being claimed that she is protesting against the Waqf Amendment Bill. Let’s find out the truth behind this video.

Claim: The viral video shows Priyanka Gandhi protesting against the Waqf Amendment Bill, surrounded by police.
Fact: The video is from 05 August 2022, when Priyanka Gandhi was detained during a Congress protest against inflation and GST in Delhi. The Waqf Amendment Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in August 2024 and passed in both Houses in April 2025—well after the video was recorded. There is no evidence of her participating in a public protest against the bill. Hence the claim is FALSE.
While verifying the claim, we found that several prominent handles, including INC Puducherry and TV Bangla Voice, had shared the same video with the claim that Priyanka Gandhi was protesting against the Waqf Amendment Bill. To uncover the truth, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to an extended version of the video uploaded on YouTube by The News National on 05 August 2022. The video shows Priyanka Gandhi coming out of a building as a crowd gathers. Soon after, some people placed gas cylinders on the road, and the protest began. The Hindi caption of the video translates to: “Priyanka Gandhi came out on the road wearing black clothes, police took her into custody.”
We also found a video report by NDTV, published on 05 August 2022, which includes the same visuals seen in the viral clip. According to the report, Congress leaders, including Sachin Pilot and Rahul Gandhi, were detained during a protest against rising inflation in the country. The video shows Priyanka Gandhi sitting on the road as police attempt to detain her, while the crowd resists. The video is captioned: “Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Sits On Road In Protest, Cops Surround Her.” This confirms that the viral video is unrelated to the Waqf Amendment Bill.
Further research led us to multiple news reports confirming that the viral video dates back to 05 August 2022 (here, here and here), when the Congress party protested against rising prices and GST. According to these reports, Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were detained, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was arrested after resisting detention by sitting on the road. She was eventually dragged and taken away by the police. Several MPs, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, and Ranjeet Ranjan, were also detained. Many Congress members wore black as a symbolic protest.

Additionally, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which proposes major changes in the management of Muslim-donated properties, was introduced in the Lok Sabha in August 2024. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on 02 April 2025, with 288 MPs voting in favour and 232 against, and later cleared by the Rajya Sabha on 04 April 2025, with 128 votes in favour and 95 against. Reports indicate that Priyanka Gandhi did not attend the session and did not vote on the bill. Moreover, we found no evidence of any Waqf-related protest involving Priyanka Gandhi. Hence, the viral video is unrelated to the Waqf Amendment Bill.

To sum up, a 2022 video of Priyanka Gandhi protesting against inflation and GST is being falsely shared as a recent protest against the Waqf Amendment Bill.
