A video of Rahul Gandhi surrounded by media, reading “I, Rahul Gandhi, hereby resign from the Congress party. I can no longer pretend to be Hindu for the sake of elections. After the ‘Nyay Yatra’, I also released the ‘Nyay Patra’ , but Modi ji is sending corrupt people to jail. This Modi Raj (rule), will send us corrupt people to jail, too, so I am going to my maternal grandfather’s house in Italy” from a paper being shared on social media (here, here and here) claiming that he resigned from the party. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

The Archived post can be seen here.

Claim: The video shows Rahul Gandhi announcing his resignation from Congress ahead of 2024 General elections.

Fact: The same video was uploaded on Rahul Gandhi’s official X account and the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress on 3 April 2024. In the original video, Rahul Gandhi read,“I, Rahul Gandhi, having been nominated as a candidate to fill a seat in the House of the People, do solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India.” This video was taken during the filing of his nomination papers from the Wayanad constituency. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

On performing a relevant keyword search regarding the viral claim, we found no media reports about Rahul Gandhi’s resignation. We also found no older videos containing such statements. Further, on performing a reverse image search of the screenshots of the viral video we came across the same video uploaded on Rahul Gandhi’s official X account and the official YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress on 3 April 2024 which indicates that Rahul Gandhi filed a nomination for the Wayanad constituency.

In the original video, Rahul Gandhi read,“I, Rahul Gandhi, having been nominated as a candidate to fill a seat in the House of the People, do solemnly affirm that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and that I will uphold the sovereignty and integrity of India.” Further, we extracted the audio from the viral video and ran it through the AI voice detection tool “AI or Not.” The tool indicated a 58% likelihood that the audio was generated using AI tools.

To sum up, a video modified utilizing AI-generated audio is circulating with the claim that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has resigned from the party ahead of the 2024 General elections.
