A video (here and here) on social media claims that the Supreme Court of India declared the degree of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be fake. According to the voice-over narration in the video, SC apparently stated that the documents he shared with the public are fake and banned him from contesting elections for six years. We fact-check this claim through this article.

An Archived version of this post can be found here.

Claim: The Supreme Court of India has banned PM Modi from contesting in elections for six years after declaring his Degree Fake.

Fact: The Supreme Court has not issued such orders in recent times. In August 2025, the Delhi High Court set aside a 2016 order by the Central Information Commission (CIC) that had directed the Delhi University to disclose information about Narendra Modi’s bachelor’s degree.  Hence, the claim made in the post is False.

To check the veracity of the claim, we performed a keyword search to check whether the Supreme Court of India has declared PM Modi’s degree fake and banned him for six years. However, we did not find any credible reports about any such order by the Supreme Court. If something like this had happened, it would have received widespread coverage.

Further, during this search, we found (here, here, here, here and here) that on 25 August 2025, ‘The Delhi High Court set aside a 2016 order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) that had directed the University of Delhi (DU) to disclose and allow inspection of records relating to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bachelor’s degree.

The verdict was pronounced by a single-judge bench headed by Justice Sachin Dutta, who, in his judgment, found that there is no public interest in the information requested under the RTI. This contradicts the portion of the claim that says that PM Modi disclosed his Degree documents publicly.

This RTI was filed by one Neeraj, based on which the CIC allowed the inspection of ‘ records of all students who cleared the BA exam in 1978 — the year Prime Minister Modi also passed it.’

During our search, we found that the voice in the viral video bears a resemblance to that of journalist Ravish Kumar. Based on this, we searched his channel for the video and did not find it, except for a video he published on the Delhi HC verdict regarding Modi’s certificate on 25 August 2025.

Furthermore, through a reverse image search, we found that the thumbnail/graphic seen in the lower part of the viral video resembles the thumbnails of a few YouTube channels (here and here) that produce fake AI-generated voice-over videos of Ravish Kumar.

To sum up, the Supreme Court of India did not declare PM Modi’s degree certificate fake and ban him from contesting elections for six years. This news is Fake.
