An old and unrelated video of Russia attacking Ukraine is falsely shared as visuals of Iran attacking Israel

On 13 June 2025, Israel launched attacks on more than a dozen targets across Iran under the codename Operation Rising Lion, with the stated objective of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Israel reportedly damaged key nuclear facilities and military installations, killing several of Iran’s top military leaders. In retaliation, Iran launched a series of ballistic missiles and drones at Israel under the name Operation True Promise 3.  Amid the escalation, a video (here, here and here) showing several missiles emerging from a water body and heading toward a destination is being shared with the claim that it shows Iran launching missiles from a submarine at Israel. Let’s find the truth behind this video.

The archived post can be found here.

Claim: The viral video shows Iranian missiles being launched from a submarine toward Israel during the recent Iranian attack.

Fact: The video is unrelated to the Iran-Israel conflict. It was originally posted by the official Facebook page of the Russian Ministry of Defence on 26 March 2022, and shows Russian forces launching Kalibr missiles at Ukrainian military infrastructure from the Black Sea. It has no connection to recent events involving Iran and Israel. Hence, the claim is FALSE.

To find the truth, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to the same video posted on the official Facebook page of the Russian Ministry of Defence on 26 March 2022. The caption stated that the Russian Armed Forces had launched a precision-guided missile strike on Ukrainian military infrastructure. This indicates that the video is from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, not related to any Iran-Israel attack.

According to the same post, the crew of a small missile ship from the Black Sea Fleet launched four Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukrainian military facilities from the Black Sea. The precision strikes reportedly destroyed a weapons and military equipment depot in Ukraine’s Zhitomir Region.

Another result led us to the same video uploaded on YouTube by the news channel Republic World on 26 March 2022, with the caption: “Russia Escalates War With Ukraine As It Fires Kalibr Missiles from Black Sea.” We also found that other news channels uploaded the same video (here and here), further confirming that it is from the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

To sum up, an old and unrelated video of Russia attacking Ukraine is falsely shared as footage of Iran attacking Israel.
