A video (here, here and here) recently went viral on social media in which Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi is seen saying that Narendra Modi will become India’s PM again on 4 June 2024. Later in the video, he says that the I.N.D.I Alliance will not be getting even one seat in Uttar Pradesh. We fact-check these claims through this article.
Claim: Rahul Gandhi proclaimed the victory of Narendra Modi in the 2024 general elections.
Fact: The viral clip is an edited version of Rahul Gandhi’s speech in a public meeting in Kanpur on 10 May 2024. Various tiny bits from this speech were clipped out of context to show that Rahul Gandhi proclaimed Modi’s victory. In his original speech, he said Narendra Modi would not become the PM this time and predicted 50-seats for the I.N.D.I Alliance in Uttar Pradesh. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.
To check the veracity of the viral claim, we performed a keyword search leading us to the original speech of Rahul Gandhi in which he spoke about Narendra Modi and the I.N.D.I Alliance. This speech is available on the official verified YouTube channel of the Indian National Congress.
He made this speech at a public meeting in Kanpur on 10 May 2024. Various moments from this speech were cut out and edited to look like he was predicting the victory of Narendra Modi once again in 2024.
At the beginning (45:54) of his speech, he says that on 4 June 2024, Narendra Modi will not be the Prime Minister of India. The bits seen in the viral video were taken from his speech from 45:54 until 47:44. Here, Rahul Gandhi can be seen saying that the media is scared to tell the truth, which, according to him, is that Narendra Modi would not be the PM of India on 4 June 2024. He further said that the I.N.D.I Alliance, which the Congress is part of, will win at least 50 seats in Uttar Pradesh. You can find an archived version of this portion of his speech here. To sum up, bits from Rahul Gandhi’s Kanpur speech were used to edit the viral video, which falsely portrays that he was proclaiming the victory of Modi in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
