An Instagram post is being widely shared claiming that the Government of India will not issue new Aadhaar cards for persons older than 5 years from 01 October 2022. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: Government of India will stop issuing new Aadhaar cards for persons older than 5 years from 01 October 2022.
Fact: UIDAI and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) have not issued any such order to stop new Aadhaar enrolments. Further, Minister of State for MeitY clarified that the enrolment for Aadhaar is a continuous process in the country. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.
We searched the internet with relevant keywords and found no such news reported by media outlets. Also, there were no notifications/circulars regarding this claim in UIDAI and MeitY websites.
Moreover, in February 2022, when asked whether the process of issuing Aadhaar cards to the citizens of the country has been completed or not, the Minister for State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajiv Chandra Sekhar answered that considering the birth of children every year and left out population of other age groups, the requirement for new enrolment for Aadhaar is a continuous process.
To sum it up, enrolment for Aadhaar is a continuous process. Indian Government has not taken any such decision to stop issuing new Aadhaar after 01 October 2022.
