Zohran Mamdani has won the Democratic nomination for New York City Mayor, he has not been elected yet
Zohran Mamdani, son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, is in the news for his recent remarks on India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has consistently raised concerns about the treatment of minorities under the Modi government. His comments have led to strong reactions from Indian-American leaders and Indian politicians, with some describing them as divisive and misinformed.
In this context, a post is being shared on social media (here, here, and here) claiming that Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the Mayor of New York. In this article, let’s verify the claim made in the post
Claim: Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the Mayor of New York.
Fact: Zohran Mamdani has not been elected as the Mayor of New York. He has only won the Democratic primary and is the party’s nominee for the upcoming general election in November 2025. If elected, he would become New York City’s first Muslim mayor of Indian origin. Hence, the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.
To verify the claim, we conducted a Google keyword search. This search led us to several media reports (here, here, and here). According to these reports, Mamdani has won the Democratic primary, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo, and is now the party’s official nominee for the upcoming general election. If elected in November 2025, he would become New York City’s first Muslim mayor of Indian origin.
We found an Instagram post dated 26 June 2025 by Zohran Mamdani’s party, the Democrats, congratulating him on becoming the Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City in the upcoming November 2025 election.
We also found a post (archived) on X dated 25 June 2025, in which Zohran Mamdani stated, “I am honoured to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City.”
