A video showing a road collapsing and forming a massive sinkhole near a high-rise apartment is going viral on social media platforms (here, here) with the claim that it depicts a road collapse near the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai. We have also received several queries on our WhatsApp tipline (+91 92470 52470), asking whether the video is from Mumbai, India. Through this article, let us verify the truth behind this video.
Claim: The video shows a massive road collapse and a sinkhole in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
Fact: This video is not from Mumbai or India. It actually shows a massive sinkhole that formed on 24 September 2025 near Vajira Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. No such incident has occurred recently in Mumbai. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.
To gather more details about the viral video, we conducted a Google reverse image search using keyframes from the clip. This search led us to multiple video and news reports from September 2025 (here, here, and here), which featured the same visuals. According to these reports, the video shows a massive 50-metre-deep sinkhole that formed on 24 September 2025 near Vajira Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.
Further research led us to a BBC report on the incident. According to the BBC, on 24 September 2025, a massive sinkhole opened on Samsen Road in front of Vajira Hospital in Bangkok, linked to the Purple Line subway construction site. The collapse extended into the hospital compound, with multiple soil slides reported throughout the day, including under the Samsen Police Station. Experts indicated that soil leakage into the tunnel–station junction, particularly through sand layers, was the likely cause. Over 50,000 sandbags were deployed to prevent further soil inflow, while investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
Furthermore, we geolocated Vajira Hospital in Bangkok on Google Street View and compared it side by side with the viral video, confirming that the incident occurred in Bangkok and not in Mumbai.
Earlier, Factly published a fact-check article when the same video went viral, falsely claiming to show a road collapse in Delhi due to metro construction work.
To sum up, a video of a road collapsing and forming a large sinkhole in Bangkok is being falsely shared as if it occurred in Mumbai.
