A video (here, here and here) is going viral on social media showing a suitcase surrounded by locals, with one person opening it to reveal a human body dressed in women’s clothing. The claim circulating with the video alleges that the victim was a Hindu woman and that she was murdered by a Muslim man named Akram. Let’s verify the truth behind this video.
Claim: The viral video shows a Hindu woman murdered by a Muslim man named Akram, with her body found inside a suitcase in Kolkata, West Bengal.
Fact: The incident in the video has no communal angle. The victim, Sumita Ghosh , was murdered by Aarati Ghosh and her daughter Falguni Ghosh because of a family dispute. They were caught trying to dispose of the body at Kumartuli Ghat, Kolkata. Police confirmed that the accused are not Muslim, hence the claim is FALSE.
To investigate, we performed a reverse image search and found multiple videos of the same incident featuring the same persons and the suitcase (here and here). One of these videos was from Crime Tak, while another was uploaded by The Indian Express on 25 February 2025, with the caption: “Kolkata Latest News: Mother and Daughter Arrested at Kumartuli Ghat for Dumping a Body.”
Further research led us to multiple reports on the incident (here, here and here). According to The Indian Express, on 25 February 2024, Aarati Ghosh and her daughter Falguni Ghosh were caught disposing of Sumita Ghosh’s body at Kumartuli Ghat, Kolkata. Sumita, the sister of Falguni’s father-in-law, was found severed inside a trolley bag after morning walkers noticed bloodstains and alerted the police. The accused claimed they killed her during a fight, and police suspect they intended to dump the body in the Hooghly River. They have been booked for murder and destruction of evidence.
The incident fell under the jurisdiction of Madhyamgram Police Station. A search on the Kolkata Police website showed that the last uploaded FIR was dated 18 February 2025, while this incident occurred on 25 February 2025. Once the FIR is available, we will update this article. Additionally, We also contacted Madhyamgram Police Station, and they confirmed that the incident was reported there. They stated that there is no communal angle to the case and verified that the names of the accused match those mentioned in the reports.
To sum up, a video showing a murdered woman in a suitcase and two accused women from Kolkata was falsely shared with a communal angle.
