Video of a burning police station from Colombia is falsely shared as Muslims burning the house of an artist from the Udaipur Files

The film titled Udaipur Files, based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal from Udaipur, was scheduled for release but has been halted by the Delhi High Court as of 10 July 2025. According to reports, Maulana Arshad Madani, President of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind filed a petition seeking a permanent ban on its release, arguing that the film promotes hate speech, targets a particular community, and could incite communal tension. In this context, a video (here, here, here, here and here) has gone viral on social media showing a group of people setting a house on fire. It is being claimed that Muslims burned down the home of an artist involved in the film Udaipur Files. Let’s find out the truth behind this viral claim.

Claim: Muslims burned down the house of an artist involved in the movie Udaipur Files in India.

Fact: The viral video is actually from Nazareth, Colombia, where locals set fire to a police station on 04 July  2025, after police mistakenly killed a man named Yulbert Barboza. There are no credible reports of Muslims burning any artist’s house related to Udaipur Files. Hence the claim is FALSE.

To find the truth, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to the same video posted by an Instagram account named soyelsilencioso on 05 July 2025. The Spanish caption indicates that the video shows locals in Nazareth, Colombia, setting fire to a police station after police mistakenly shot and killed Yulbert Barboza, confusing his vehicle with one involved in an earlier attack.

Additional search led us to the same incident from a different angle, shared on other Colombian social media accounts (here and here). The visuals closely match the viral video, depicting the same sequence of events. The caption also confirms that the incident occurred in Nazareth, Colombia.

A deeper investigation into the incident led us to reports from several local media outlets in Colombia. According to these reports (here, here and here), on 04 July 2025, Yulbert Fernández Barbosa was shot dead by police in Nazareth, La Guajira, after they allegedly mistook his vehicle for one used in an earlier attack on the police station. His death triggered widespread outrage, prompting locals to set the police station on fire and demand justice. The event occurred amid growing unrest in the region, driven by violent clashes between armed groups such as the Gulf Clan and the Conquistadoras de la Sierra Nevada (ACSN).

Further, we found a copy of the Delhi High Court’s judgment dated July 10, which stayed the release of the movie Udaipur Files. After the producers approached the Supreme Court, it directed the Centre to urgently review the film’s certification under the Cinematograph Act, citing communal concerns raised by Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind and ensuring the filmmakers’ safety. However, we found no credible reports of Muslims burning the homes of artists involved in the Udaipur Files.

To sum up, a video of a burning police station from Colombia is falsely shared as Muslims burning the house of an artist from the Udaipur Files.
