On 12 June 2025, Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. The aircraft lost altitude within minutes and went down in the Meghani Nagar area near the airport, erupting in flames (here, here). It crashed into the hostel building of B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital, which was reportedly housing medical students at the time. Over 240 people were on board, including nationals of India, the UK, Portugal, and Canada (here). Investigation into the causes of the incident is ongoing, led by the DGCA, AAIB, and Air India.
In this context, a video (here, here, and here) is going viral on social media that shows visuals from the cockpit, window view, and inside the cabin, where the entire flight appears to be shaking. It is being claimed that this video is from the crashed Air India flight. Let’s find the truth behind this video.
Claim: The viral video showing a flight shaking violently from the cockpit and inside the cabin is from the recent Air India Ahmedabad flight crash incident.
Fact: The video has been available online at least since 26 December 2024, and predates the Ahmedabad crash incident of the Air India flight in June 2025. A few social media handles suggest that it is from the Azerbaijan Airlines crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan, which occurred on December 25 and involved an Embraer 190 aircraft. Though we could not independently confirm this, it is clear that the video is not related to the recent Ahmedabad crash incident. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
To find the truth, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to the same video uploaded on Instagram by the handle @a_komiljonovich on 26 December 2024 — well before the Ahmedabad flight crash incident of June 2025. The caption mentioned that the incident involved an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 flight that crashed in Aktau, Kazakhstan. We also found several other posts and videos making the same claim about this footage (here, here and here).
Further research using relevant keywords and dates led us to media reports (here, here and here) stating that Azerbaijan declared a national day of mourning after an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on 25 December 2024, killing 38 of the 67 people on board. The flight, which was en route from Baku to Grozny, was diverted due to bad weather and possibly a bird strike. Videos from the scene showed the aircraft breaking apart and survivors helping one another from the wreckage. Officials from both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are investigating the crash. However, we could not independently verify whether the viral video is from this specific incident. What is clear is that the video has been available on the internet for a long time before the recent Ahmedabad crash and has no connection to it.
To sum up, this video, taken from inside the cockpit and cabin of a flight shaking, is not related to the June 2025 Ahmedabad Crash incident of the Air India flight.
