Cyclone Montha made landfall along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, with the Andhra coast being the most severely affected, on 28 October 2025, causing widespread destruction (here and here). Amid this devastation, a video (here, here and here) showing a massive whirlpool in a water body has gone viral on social media, with users claiming it shows the effects of Cyclone Montha. Here’s the truth behind the video.

Claim: The viral video showing a massive whirlpool in a water body depicts the impact of Cyclone Montha in Andhra Pradesh.
Fact: This video is AI-generated. The video was available on the web from much before Cyclone Montha and was detected as AI-generated by AI detection tools. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
To verify the claim, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to the same video uploaded multiple times on social media in July, August and September 2025, well before Cyclone Montha, the formation of which began in late October 2025. This confirms that the viral video has no connection with Cyclone Montha.
Upon further search, we found the same video shared on Facebook in July 2025, carrying a watermark that reads “Dr. Vea.” Dr. Vea is a TikTok page known for regularly posting AI-generated videos. Factly has previously published fact-checks debunking several videos (here and here) from this page when they were falsely shared as real visuals of ocean sinkholes.
To confirm whether the video was AI-generated, we analysed it using the AI detection tool Hive Moderation. The tool indicated with 95.75% confidence that the video is AI-generated. This finding, along with other evidence, confirms that the viral video has no connection to Cyclone Montha and is, in fact, an AI-generated creation.
To sum up, this This video of a massive whirlpool, allegedly showing impact of Cyclone Montha, is AI-generated.
