Muslim e-rickshaw driver who lost consciousness during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the Lucknow Police is alive

A video (here, here, here, here, and here) showing a policeman carrying an unconscious young man on his shoulders is going viral on social media, with claims that a Muslim e-rickshaw driver was beaten to death by the police near Nishatganj crossroads in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Through this article, let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

Claim: Video of a Muslim e-rickshaw driver who died after being brutally beaten by the Lucknow police.

Fact: The man seen unconscious in the viral video and being carried away by policemen in the video is alive. According to news reports, on 08 March 2025, an e-rickshaw driver, Noor Ahmed, was beaten by the police during an anti-encroachment drive at Nishatganj intersection under the Mahanagar police station limits in Lucknow, causing him to lose consciousness. On 09 March 2025, the Lucknow Police clarified that the man is alive and further stated that cases would be registered, and legal action would be taken against those spreading false information on social media, falsely claiming that the e-rickshaw driver was killed in a police attack in Lucknow. So far, a case has already been registered against 18 people for spreading false news. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

To verify the accuracy of the viral claim, we conducted a Google keyword search. This search led us to multiple news reports  (herehere, here, and here) published on 08 March 2025. According to these reports, on 08 March 2025, at around 11:30 am, while the police were clearing traffic at the Nishatganj intersection under the Mahanagar police station limits in Lucknow as part of an anti-encroachment drive, an altercation broke out between the police and an e-rickshaw driver named Noor. The argument escalated, and eyewitnesses claimed that the policemen assaulted him so severely that he fainted on the spot. As soon as the incident occurred, passersby and fellow drivers gathered in protest, condemning the police’s actions, as per these reports. None of these reports mentioned that the e-rickshaw driver died in this incident.

According to a news report published by ‘NavBharat Times on 10 March 2025, action has been taken against Constable Jagpal on charges of assaulting an e-rickshaw driver named Noor Ahmed at Nishatganj Junction, under the jurisdiction of Mahanagar police station in Lucknow, on 08 March 2025. The report further stated that Lucknow police registered a case against 18 individuals under Sections 196, 221, 353(2), 61(2), 352, and 7 of the IPC for spreading false information on social media, falsely claiming that the e-rickshaw driver was killed in a police attack in Lucknow.

On 09 March 2025, the Lucknow Police, responding to these viral posts, clarified on their official X( formerly Twitter) handle that the person who was injured during an anti-encroachment drive at Nishatganj Junction is alive and safe. The post further stated that cases would be registered and legal action would be taken against those spreading false information on social media, falsely claiming that the e-rickshaw driver was killed in a police attack in Lucknow. The post also included a press release, which mentioned that, so far, a case had been registered against 18 individuals under Sections 196, 221, 353(2), 61(2), 352, and 7 of the IPC for spreading false information on social media.

During this search, we found a post made by the Samajwadi Party on their official Facebook page on 10 March 2025. In this post, they shared a photo of Samajwadi Party leaders providing financial assistance to e-rickshaw driver Noor Mohammad, who was injured and lost consciousness during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the Lucknow Police at Nishatganj Junction. In the photo, Noor Mohammad appears to be fine. From all this information, it is evident that he is alive.

To sum it up, the Muslim e-rickshaw driver, Noor Ahmed, who lost consciousness and sustained injuries during an anti-encroachment drive conducted by the Lucknow Police, is alive.
