Fact: The video does not show Lovepreet Singh smiling after killing his sister’s rapist, Onkar Singh. Onkar Singh was murdered on 28 August 2024, and Lovepreet was arrested on 4 September 2024. However, the viral video was posted on Instagram on 10 April 2024. The boy is identified as “Addu Defaulter” on his Instagram handle. the claim made in the post is FALSE.
A Google keyword search led us to a media report and a statement from Kapurthala Police on the X platform about the murder of Onkar Singh. According to these reports, Onkar Singh, convicted of raping Lovepreet’s sister in 2015, was released on bail early in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and was murdered on 28 August 2024. The police arrested Akashdeep Singh from Majahadpur village for the crime and were on the lookout for the other accused, who was identified as Lovepreet Singh of Bishanpur Jattan village.
Further investigation led us to a media report, regarding the same incident which stated that Lovepreet Singh was eventually arrested on 04 September 2024.
Further, a reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to the Instagram handle “Addu Defaulter,” who posted videos (here and here) on 10 April 2024 that matched the viral video. However, we could not independently verify the location of the video. But as this video’s presence predates the murder of Onkar Singh on 28 August 2024, it confirms that the video doesn’t show Lovepreet smiling after killing his sister’s rapist.
