Following the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, in the first week of April, Muslims have been protesting against the newly enacted law across the country, including in West Bengal (here, here, and here). According to news reports (here, here), on 11 April 2025, these protests turned violent in Murshidabad district, West Bengal, resulting in Violence and riots. Reports (here, here, and here) indicate that three people lost their lives in the violence: two Hindus, Chandan Das and Hargobind Das, were killed in a mob attack, while a Muslim man died in police firing. According to reports, hundreds of people (mostly Hindus) affected by the violence in Murshidabad district crossed the Bhagirathi River. They sought refuge in the adjoining Malda district (here, here, and here). On 12 April 2025, the Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces to restore peace and order in the district (here).
Amid the ongoing unrest, a video (here, here and here) has gone viral on social media showing an angry crowd pelting stones at four individuals, forcing them to flee. It is being claimed that three members of a family were beaten to death in Murshidabad. Let’s find out the truth behind this claim.
Claim: The viral video shows three members of a family being beaten to death in Murshidabad, West Bengal, amid ongoing communal unrest.
Fact: This video is unrelated to the recent violence in West Bengal. It actually depicts an incident from April 2024 in Jaipur, Rajasthan, where a land dispute led to one community pelting stones at a family. Multiple news reports confirm this. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
To verify the claim, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to multiple news reports (here, here, here, here, here) from April 2024. According to these reports, the video is from Jaipur, Rajasthan, not Murshidabad. The incident took place in the Sanganer area under the Malpura Gate police station limits, where a group of 50–60 people attacked three members of the same family and evicted them from a house over a land dispute. The video had gone viral at the time.
According to an April 2024 report by NDTV Rajasthan, the incident took place at the residence of Shankar Suiwal, where a group of individuals allegedly misbehaved with the women in the house and then began pelting stones at the family. Shankar told NDTV that the attack was linked to a property dispute, accusing Subhash Chand and Nanda Kishore, residents of Bayana and Bharatpur, of attempting to encroach on his ancestral land.
Police had confirmed to the media that the incident stemmed from an old property dispute. ACP Vinod Sharma stated that the accused were arrested and an investigation was ongoing. All available evidence confirms that the incident took place in Rajasthan in 2024.
To sum up, the video showing an attack on a family is not from Murshidabad, but from Jaipur, Rajasthan, and is related to a land dispute, not a communal incident.
