The Hindu Population in GHMC is 64.93% whereas the Muslim Population is 30.13% (2011 Census)

A post is being shared on social media with a claim that the Hyderabad City Population trend shows the Muslim population has increased from 31% (1991 Census) to 43.45% (2011 Census) whereas the Hindu Population has decreased from 60%  (1991 Census) to 51.88% (2011 Census). Let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.

The archived version of the post can be found here.

Claim: While the Muslim population in the Hyderabad City has increased from 31% (1991 Census) to 43.45% (2011 Census), the Hindu Population has decreased from 60% (1991 Census) to 51.88% (2011 Census).

Fact: The 2011 figures mentioned in the post are related to the Hyderabad District, not GHMC (i.e. Hyderabad City). Also, the 1991 figures mentioned in the post are not correct. According to the 2011 Census, the Hindu Population in GHMC is 64.93% whereas the Muslim Population is 30.13%. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

On looking for the mentioned figures in the Census data, it was found that the 2011 figures mentioned in the post are related to the Hyderabad District, not GHMC (i.e. Hyderabad City). Also, the 1991 figures mentioned in the post are not correct. The Muslim population share in 1991 was around 39%, not 31%. The 1991 and 2001 Census data of Hyderabad District can be found here.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is spread across four districts (Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Sangareddy, and Medchal – Malkajgiri). So, just the Hyderabad district data cannot be shown as the data related to the whole Hyderabad City. The GHMC religion-wise population data can be found in the 2011 Census. It can be observed that the Hindu Population in GHMC, according to the 2011 Census, is 64.93% whereas the Muslim Population is 30.13%. The GHMC, in its existing form, has been established only in the 2000s by a notification by the then Andhra Pradesh government. So the previous data for the same exact region is not available.

Similar data for the Ranga Reddy District can be seen in the table below:

To sum it up, the 2011 figures mentioned in the post are related to the Hyderabad District, not GHMC (i.e. Hyderabad City). Also, the 1991 figures mentioned in the post are not correct.
