A post (here, here and here) is going viral on social media claiming that ahead of the 2007 T20 World Cup, Lalit Modi announced he would gift a Porsche car to anyone who hit six sixes in an over. It further claims that Yuvraj Singh achieved this, received a Porsche worth ₹91 lakh from Lalit Modi, and later auctioned the same bat for ₹7 crore. Let’s verify the truth behind these claims.
Claim: Ahead of the 2007 T20 World Cup, Lalit Modi gifted Yuvraj Singh a Porsche for hitting six sixes in an over, and later auctioned the bat used by him for ₹7 crore.
Fact: While it is true that Lalit Modi gifted a Porsche to Yuvraj Singh for hitting six sixes, there is no report that the bat was auctioned for ₹7 crore. Lalit Modi has stated in podcasts that the bat is still with him, and no credible reports support the auction claim. Hence, the claim is FALSE.
To verify the claim, we conducted a keyword search to check whether Lalit Modi had gifted a Porsche to Yuvraj Singh in exchange for the bat and whether the bat was later auctioned for ₹7 crore. However, this search did not yield any credible reports supporting the claim. According to an August 2025 article by Jagran Josh, Australian cricketer Shane Warne’s iconic “Baggy Green” cap was sold at auction for ₹5.79 crore (one million Australian dollars). If Yuvraj Singh’s bat had indeed been auctioned for as much as ₹7 crore, it would have attracted widespread media coverage.
Another search led us to a Times of India report, which states that Lalit Modi had offered a Porsche to anyone who hit six sixes in an over during the 2007 T20 World Cup, a feat achieved by Yuvraj Singh. The report mentions that Lalit Modi gifted the Porsche to Yuvraj Singh. However, it also notes that when Yuvraj asked for the car, Lalit Modi asked for the bat used to hit the six sixes in return, and there is no mention of the bat being auctioned.
Further keyword searches show that Lalit Modi has spoken about this incident on both the Raj Shamani podcast and Australian cricketer Stuart Clarke’s podcast. We found the Raj Shamani podcast, released on 23 November 2024, in which Lalit Modi discussed the matter in detail. At around the 50:33 timestamp, he said that he met the Indian team ahead of the 2007 T20 World Cup and offered a Porsche to anyone who hit six sixes in an over or took six wickets in an over. He mentioned that Yuvraj Singh achieved the feat and later asked him for the Porsche. In response, Lalit Modi said he asked for the bat used to hit the six sixes. At around the 51:28 timestamp, he further stated that the bat is still with him.
We also found that Lalit Modi made similar statements on Stuart Clarke’s podcast in August 2025, where he said that the bat with which Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes is kept at his house in London. However, contrary to the viral claim, he did not state in any podcast or interview that the bat was sold at auction for ₹7 crore. Moreover, there are no credible reports supporting such an auction, confirming that this part of the claim is false.
To sum up, the claim that Lalit Modi auctioned the bat used by Yuvraj Singh to hit six sixes in an over for ₹7 crore is false.
