Shraddha’s murder case accused Aaftab Amin Poonawala is a Muslim, not a Parsi

Following the arrest of Aaftab Amin Poonawala over the murder of Shraddha in South Delhi, a social media post is being widely shared claiming that Aaftab belongs to the Parsi community. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Claim: Shraddha’s murder accused Aaftab Amin Poonawala belongs to Parsi community.

Fact: FIR lodged at Mehrauli Police station and voter ID details of Aaftab and his family members, indicate that Aaftab belongs to the Muslim community. Moreover, in 2014, when a user asked about Aaftab’s religion on Instagram, Aaftab clarified that he is a Muslim. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

We searched for the social media accounts of Aaftab and came across his Instagram account by the name ‘thehungrychokro’. From this account, he posted his selfie on 05 April 2014. On 10 October 2014, a user(@zloymom) asked Aaftab whether he is a Hindu or Muslim. On the same day, Aaftab clarified that he is a Muslim.

Also, according to the FIR (No.0659) filed at Mehrauli’s police station on 10 November 2022, Shraddha’s father statement reads, “In 2019, My daughter (Shraddha) told my wife that she was in live-in relationship with Aaftab Amin Poonawala, but my wife and I did not agree to this because I am a Hindu whereas he (Aaftab) is a Muslim and inter-religion/inter-caste marriage was not acceptable in our circles”

Based on these details, we can conclude that Aaftab belongs to the Muslim community, and is not a Parsi.
