The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) was established to impart various vocational skills in unemployed youth. The NSDC extends training through various Sector Skill Councils (SSCs). As per data with the government, a total of 28.22 lakh were trained by NSDC from 2011-12 to 2014-15. Out of the 28.22 lakh, only 26.5% belong to the SCs, STs and OBCs.

The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) was established to impart various vocational skills in unemployed youth. The NSDC has approved 39 industry led bodies called Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) to promote industry/employer participation out of which 29 SSCs are operational in various sectors like Agriculture, Automotive, Healthcare, Construction and Plumbing. The Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) are industry led bodies intended to align the skilling efforts as per the industry’s requirement. The SSCs prescribe the National Occupational Standards (NOS) and Qualification Packs (QPs) based on which the training is imparted.

28.22 lakh trained from 2011-12 to 2014-15

As per the data available with the government, a total of 28.22 lakh people were trained by the various SSCs under NSDC from 2011-12 to 2014-15. The number of people trained has been increasing continuously over the years. From 1.81 lakh trained in 2011-12, the number increased to 12.33 lakh in 2014-15, a growth of close to 600%.

Only 26.5% belong to SCs, STs & OBCs

Out of the 28.22 lakh trained in the four years, only 7.47 lakh belong to SCs, STs and OBCs. This is about 26.5% of the total trained.  A total of 2.41 lakh SCs (8.5%), 1.14 lakh STs (4%) and 3.91 lakh OBCs (13.9%) were trained by NSDC in these 4 years.

The Percentage of SCs, STs and OBCs is increasing

The percentage of SCs, STs and OBCs in the total trained pool is increasing each year. From a mere 5.6% in 2011-12, this has gone up to 32.6% in 2014-15. The percentage was 19.2% in 2012-13 and 25.7% in 2013-14.

Within the various sub groups, the proportion of SCs and OBCs is increasing each year while the proportion of STs has remained more or less constant at 4% since 2012-13. The proportion of SCs in the trained pool increased from a mere 1.9% in 2011-12 to 10.6% in 2014-15. The proportion of OBCs also increased from a mere 3.3% in 2011-12 to 17.4% in 2014-15.
