A social media post accompanying a video of a group of men along with police barging into a room filled with Muslim students is being widely shared with a claim that the video shows a government school in Delhi’s Vijay Nagar, that has been converted into a Madrasa with the help of the Kejriwal government’s support. Through this article let’s fact-check the claim made in the post.
Claim: A government school in Delhi has been converted to a Madrasa.
Fact: These visuals are from a government school in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad. Couple of local news agencies have reported the same visuals as from Ghaziabad. Moreover, as per the reports, the viral visuals are related to Quran recitation programme organised by a Muslim teacher of the school with the permission of the school management for the wellbeing of their children. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.
These viral visuals are show a government school in Uttar Pradesh and not Delhi. Reverse image search of the viral visuals yielded couple of YouTube videos (here & here) which carried similar visuals. These videos were uploaded back in 2021 and the description states that the visuals are from a government school in Ghaziabad. The description of the video reads ‘Islamic Activities in Government School of Primary School Mirzapur, Vijayanagar, Ghaziabad, U.P.’
Taking a cue from the YouTube videos, further search yielded a local news report that reported the same visuals. Even as per this report, the visuals are from a government school in Ghaziabad.
However, the school is not turned into a madrasa as claimed in the post. Dainik Bhaskar, after speaking to the Vijayanagar police reported that a Muslim teacher of the school with the permission of the school management organised a Quran recitation programme for the wellbeing of their children and the viral visuals are related to this programme. Further, according to the report, no case has been filed in this regard as the police did not find anything objectionable in their investigation.
To sum it up, these visuals are old and are from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad and not Delhi as claimed. Moreover, the school was not turned into a Madrasa.
