Old video from Uganda shared as recent visuals of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in South Africa

A video is being shared on social media claiming it as the recent visuals of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Sree Ganesh temple in Entebbe, South Africa. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.

Fact: The video shared in the post is related to an old Ganapathi Chaturthi celebration at Shree Ganesh temple in Entebbe, Uganda. This video has nothing to do with South Africa. Hence the claim made in the post is MISLEADING.

On reverse image search of the screenshots in the video, similar visuals were found in the videos published by few social media users in 2017. They can be seen here and here. These users mentioned it as the visuals of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Shree Ganesh temple in Entebbe, Uganda. They described it as the African style of celebrating the Ganesh festival.

In September 2018, Bollywood actor Anupam Kher had shared the same video with a similar description on his Instagram handle. Several media outlets have published videos and articles reporting this video shared by Anupama Kher. They can be seen here and here

To obtain the complete details of this video, the ‘Boom’ fact-checking organization had contacted Rahul C Mushrif, the chairman of Shree Ganesh temple in Entebbe. Rahul Mushrif confirmed that the video was shot during the 2017 Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at Shree Ganesh temple in Entebbe. Also, Rahul Mushrif shared a poster of the 2017 Ganesh Chaturthi event with ‘Boom’. From all these pieces of evidence, it can be concluded that the video shared in the post is an old one and not related to South Africa.
