On Facebook, a few users are sharing a photo of ‘Certificate of Peace’ purportedly issued by UNESCO declaring Islam as ‘the most peaceful religion of the world’. Let’s try to analyze the claims made in the post.

The archived version of the post can be seen here.

Claim: UNESCO has issued a “Certificate of Peace” declaring Islam as ‘the most peaceful religion of the world’.

Fact: UNESCO has denounced that it has declared Islam as ‘the most peaceful religion of the world’. It also clarified that the certificate doing the rounds on the organisation’s name is a fake one. Hence, the claim made in the post stands FALSE.

When searched if ‘United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation(UNESCO)’ has issued any ‘Certificate of Peace’ declaring Islam as ‘the most peaceful religion of the world’, a notice of UNESCO denouncing such a statement was found. In the notice, it said, “UNESCO has never had any official relationship with the entity referred to as ‘International Peace Foundation’, nor has it ever supported such a statement or granted any diploma of this kind. In line with its mandate, the Organization has the responsibility to promote interreligious and intercultural dialogue on a global scale, with the unerring support of its Member States, partners and networks. In doing so, UNESCO promotes respect on equal grounds for all traditions and faiths, always striving to build bridges and strengthen ties whenever possible.” This notice was issued July 2016.

To conclude, UNESCO hasn’t declared Islam as ‘the most peaceful religion of the world’.
