A post featuring the screenshot of Amar Ujala’s news article is being shared on social media (here, here, and here) claiming that Imam of Ahle Sunnat Ala Hazrat wrote a book called ‘Zameen Sakin Hai‘ 100 years ago, arguing that the Earth is static, and the Sun is revolving, based on the Quran, and today, NASA backs this idea. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: NASA backed the idea of Imam of Ahle Sunnat Ala Hazrat who wrote a book called Zameen Sakin Hai 100 years ago, based on the Quran, in which he stated that “the Earth is static, and the Sun is revolving.”
Fact: Based on the Quran Ala Hazrat declared, “The sun and moon do move according to their course. They are sailing within a circle. It is the earth (not the sun) that is stationary around which the sun and other planets revolve.” However, the viral article by Amar Ujala was published on 13 June 2024 which mentions that Earth revolves around a Barycenter and not around the Sun. Planets and Stars orbit around a common center of mass called the Barycenter. The Barycentre is usually near the heaviest object. Between the Sun and Earth, the barycenter is close to the Sun’s center. For the Sun and Jupiter, it’s outside the Sun’s surface. The entire solar system has a Barycenter, which is the center of mass of all the objects in it. The Sun, Earth, and all the planets orbit around this point. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
On performing a relevant keyword search regarding the Imam of Ahle Sunnat Ala Hazrat’s stationary earth view, we found that based on the Quran, Ala Hazrat declared, “The sun and moon do move according to their course. They are sailing within a circle. It is the earth (not the sun) that is stationary around which the sun and other planets revolve (here, here, and here).”
While searching for the news reports shared in the viral claim by using a relevant keyword search, it led us to the article published by Amar Ujala on 13 July 2024. The article was titled “Earth is not revolving around the Sun; the world is surprised by this revelation of NASA (translated).” Further, the article mentions that Earth revolves around a barycenter and not around the Sun.
Subsequent research led us to news reports that published the same story (here, here, and here). All these reports mention that Earth orbits a barycentre and not exactly the Sun. Currently, the barycentre is outside the Sun and not inside it. So, the planet is revolving around a point in space and not the Sun. This was explained by quoting Kepler’s third law published by NASA and Planetary astronomer Dr. James O’Donoghue’s explanation about Planet’s orbit. However, these do not mention that the Earth is static and that the Sun is revolving in an orbit as stated in the viral claim.
As per the NASA website, Planets and Stars orbit around a common centre of mass called the Barycenter. The Barycentre is usually near the heaviest object. Between the Sun and Earth, the barycenter is close to the Sun’s center. For the Sun and Jupiter, it’s outside the Sun’s surface. The entire solar system has a Barycenter, which is the centre of mass of all the objects in it. The Sun, Earth, and all the planets orbit around this point (here and here).
To sum up, NASA does not support Imam Ahle Sunnat Aala Hazrat’s view of the revolving Sun and static Earth.
