Among the many parameters, two important indicators submitted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment highlight efforts to support vulnerable populations through targeted welfare schemes.
Institutional Assistance to Senior Citizens
This indicator measures the number of elderly persons receiving support through government-funded Senior Citizen Homes and Day Care Centres. As India’s ageing population grows, ensuring access to dignified institutional care becomes essential for social protection.
The number of beneficiaries increased from 0.23 lakh in 2015 to 1.58 lakh in 2024, with notable growth after 2019. This rise in number reflects both rising demand and expanded service delivery.
Persons Treated in De-addiction Centres
This indicator measures the number of individuals receiving treatment in de-addiction centres funded by the Ministry. Substance abuse poses a growing public health challenge, and structured intervention is key.
Between 2015-16 and 2023-24, the number of people treated in de-addiction centres rose from 1.46 lakh to 5.82 lakh, reflecting a 4-fold increase. This sharp rise can be attributed to both expanding treatment capacity and growing awareness that addiction is a health issue requiring structured intervention.
