Images generated using AI are falsely shared as visuals of a massive rally held in Manipur
A video (here and here) on social media claims to show a massive gathering held in Manipur. The video containing a series of images is being shared along with a post description that reads, ‘ Why this voice of Manipur is not reaching the ears of Modi government, or Modiji does not want to hear❓’ We fact-check this claim through this article.
Claim: Viral video shows visuals of a rally held in Manipur.
Fact: This is an AI-generated video. The images in the video were created by the video creator named ‘Manab Jyoti Gogoi.’ Gogoi posted this video on his Instagram page on 1 February 2024. Hence, the claim made in the post is False.
To check the veracity of the viral claim, we performed a keyword search on the internet to see if such a rally was held in Manipur. We found a few news reports (here, here, here, and here) about the rallies held in Manipur between June and November 2024 but none of them contained the visuals that matched the viral video. During this process, we observed the viral video carefully and found a few anomalies that are usually found in AI-generated content.
To verify this, we ran the viral video through Hive Moderation, an AI content detection tool. Hive’s analysis report showed that the viral video is 99.8% likely to have been generated using AI (archive link).
We then performed a reverse image search on the internet and found an Instagram post (archive link) that contained the same video. This video was posted by a ‘Digital video creator’ named Manab Jyoti Gogoi on 1 February 2024.
In the description of the post, Manab stated that all the images seen in the video were generated using AI. We found that Gogoi posts many such AI-generated videos and images on his page (here and here). This makes it clear that the viral video does not depict visuals of an actual rally held in Manipur but contains images generated using Artificial intelligence.
To sum up, the images featured in the viral video were generated using AI by a Digital Content Creator. The video does not show visuals of an actual rally held in Manipur recently.
