Government revises the format for collection of Road Accident Data

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), Government of India releases the ‘Road Accidents in India’ report every calendar year based on the data collected from States in a 19 table APRAD format. The MoRTH has now revised it into a 17 table format for collection of road accident data.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), Government of India releases the ‘Road Accidents in India’ report every calendar year. The report provides data on road accidents in States/UTs on different parameters such as number of fatalities, number of injured, type of vehicles, reasons for accident etc. The MoRTH has now issued a revised format to all the states for collection of the road accident data.

Collection of Data on Road Accidents

The Transport Research Wing (TRW) of MoRTH is the nodal agency for providing data on various aspects of road transport in the country. The information is collected from the Police Headquarters of each State/UT and in Million plus cities through designated nodal officers. The information used to be collected in a 19 item format devised under Asia Pacific Road Accident Data (APRAD) project of United Nations Economic & Social Commission for the Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) till last year.

The 19 item APRAD format is now slightly modified into a revised 17 table format. Modifications have been made by merging a few tables and deleting some unnecessary items.
