A post (here, here, and here) is being widely shared on social media, claiming that the Government of India has declared 06 June 2025 (Friday) as a national public holiday, resulting in the closure of banks, schools, and government offices. The post further claims that the decision is linked to an undisclosed national event. Let’s verify the claim made in the post.
Claim: The Government of India has declared 06 June 2025 (Friday) as a national public holiday.
Fact: No such decision was taken by the Government of India. Official sources, including the National Portal of India, list 07 June 2025 (Saturday) as the gazetted holiday for Bakrid. The claim was circulated by an unverified website known for spreading AI-generated misinformation without citing official sources. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.
First, we checked whether the Government of India had announced any such decision, but found no official notice or press release on the matter. We then visited the National Portal of India, which shows that for June 2025, only 07 June 2025 (Saturday) is declared as a Gazetted Holiday for Bakrid. Holiday lists released by several states also confirm that 07 June 2025 is the designated general holiday for Bakrid.
Moreover, PIB Fact Check and the Tamil Nadu Government’s fact-check unit clarified that the Central Government has made no such announcement. It also mentioned that the Tamil Nadu School Education Department stated schools will remain open on 6 June 2025 (Friday).
Further investigation revealed that this claim was circulated through an article (archive) published by an unverified website that cited no official sources. We had earlier debunked a false claim by the same website, which incorrectly stated that the government had launched free travel for senior citizens. This website typically uses stock images for author photos and publishes AI-generated content on sensational and fake news topics, likely to boost website traffic and ad revenue.
Additionally, while the Kerala Government initially declared 06 June 2025 as a holiday for Bakrid, it later revised the decision and announced that 06 June will be a working day, with the holiday shifted to 07 June 2025. However, at the time of publishing this article, according to the RBI and websites of major Indian banks (here, here, here, and here), banks in Kerala will remain closed on 06 June 2025 for Bakrid.
To sum it up, the Government of India has not declared 6 June 2025 as a public holiday.
