Former Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli visited India during his previous terms as PM

On 04 September 2025, the Nepal government banned 26 major social media platforms, sparking nationwide youth-led protests that turned violent from 08 September 2025 onwards, leaving at least 19 people dead and hundreds injured as demonstrators clashed with security forces and targeted government properties, including the residence of the President. Despite lifting the ban on 09 September 2025, anger persisted, with protesters demanding Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli’s resignation over corruption and inequality. Oli stepped down the same day along with several ministers. At the same time, the army was deployed to restore order as Nepal grappled with its biggest political and social crisis in recent years, fuelled by high youth unemployment, corruption, and resentment against entrenched elites.

Amidst this, a post circulating on social media (here, here, and here) claims that KP Sharma Oli, who recently resigned as Nepal’s Prime Minister, is the first and only leader of Nepal never to have visited India during his tenure. Let’s verify the claim made in the post in this article.

Claim: KP Sharma Oli never visited India during his tenure as Nepal’s Prime Minister.

Fact: The claim that KP Sharma Oli never visited India during his tenure as Nepal’s Prime Minister is not true. He visited India twice during his earlier terms—first in February 2016 and again in April 2018. However, during his fourth tenure from 15 July 2024 to 09 September 2025, Oli did not make any official visit to India. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

To verify the claim, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords and found that Former Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli visited India twice during his entire tenure as PM. During his first visit in February 2016, he met Indian leaders, visited the Tehri hydropower project, post-earthquake reconstruction sites in Bhuj and Mumbai, and signed agreements on reconstruction funding, road infrastructure, cultural cooperation, transit routes, and rail transport, with the Press Information Bureau (PIB) highlighting the review of bilateral relations and India’s support for Nepal’s development. In his second visit in April 2018, Oli and Prime Minister Modi reviewed strategic ties, inaugurated the Birgunj Integrated Check Post, initiated the Motihari-Amlekhgunj petroleum pipeline, and signed agreements on agriculture, rail, and inland waterway connectivity, with the PIB noting that the visit strengthened India-Nepal cooperation.

We also found an X post by PM Modi on 07 April 2018, where he shared photos from Rashtrapati Bhavan and mentioned hosting former PM Oli. Additionally, multiple media reports confirm his visit in both February 2016 (here, here) and April 2018 (here, here).

However, during his fourth tenure as Prime Minister, from 15 July 2024 to 09 September 2025, K.P. Sharma Oli did not undertake any official visit to India. There are no records of diplomatic trips or ministerial engagements to India during this period.

To sum up, the viral claim that former Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli never visited India during his tenure is not true; he visited India during his previous terms as PM.
