Elon Musk did not comment that Prime Minister Modi agreed to the India–Pakistan ceasefire to prevent Adani’s arrest

Following the 22 April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, India launched Operation Sindoor, escalating tensions along the Line of Control (LoC). Both sides reported intensified cross-border firing and armed forces operations, leading to military and civilian casualties (herehere, and here). After days of attacks from both sides, diplomatic backchannels led to a ceasefire agreement through high-level military and diplomatic talks. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, publicly weighed in on the situation. On multiple occasions (herehere), Trump spoke about the importance of a ceasefire and offered to mediate between India and Pakistan to foster peace.

In this context, a graphic (here, here, and here) is going viral on social media, claiming that Elon Musk stated Prime Minister Modi agreed to the 2025 India–Pakistan ceasefire agreement to prevent the arrest of an Indian industrialist. Some posts specifically name the industrialist as Adani. In this article, we will fact-check the claim made in the viral post.

The archived version of this post can be found here.

Claim: Elon Musk stated that Indian Prime Minister Modi agreed to the 2025 India–Pakistan ceasefire agreement to prevent the arrest of Indian industrialist Gautam Adani.

Fact: The viral claim is false. Elon Musk did not make any such comments about Prime Minister Modi or the India–Pakistan ceasefire agreement. There is no credible evidence to support the claim. Hence the claim made in the post is FALSE.

To verify the veracity of the viral claim, we conducted a relevant keyword search. However, we did not find any credible reports supporting it. If Elon Musk had indeed made such comments about Prime Minister Modi and India’s ceasefire agreement with Pakistan following Operation Sindoor in May 2025, it is likely that both national and international media would have reported on it.

We then reviewed Elon Musk’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, but found no posts from him supporting the viral claim. However, during our search, we did come across a post made by Musk on 10 May 2025 regarding the India–Pakistan ceasefire. In response to a tweet by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the ceasefire, Musk simply replied, “Congratulations”. In his post, Rubio mentioned that he and Vice President JD Vance had discussed the ceasefire with senior leaders and military officials from both India and Pakistan.

There is no credible evidence to support the claim that Elon Musk stated Indian Prime Minister Modi agreed to the 2025 India–Pakistan ceasefire agreement to prevent the arrest of Indian industrialist Gautam Adani.

While US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that the United States played a key role in mediating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan (here, here, and here), India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has firmly rejected suggestions that the United States played a decisive role in brokering the recent ceasefire. The MEA clarified that it was India’s military response that compelled Islamabad to independently halt hostilities (here, here, and here).

On 13 May 2025, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India had been engaged in discussions with the United States from 07 May 2025 until the understanding regarding the cessation of fire and military action with Pakistan on 10 May 2025 was reached. He further clarified that the issue of trade had not come up in any of these discussions (here, here).

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has also rejected the notion that the United States mediated the ceasefire. He reiterated that India’s longstanding policy is to resolve bilateral issues directly with Pakistan, without third-party involvement. Jaishankar emphasised that the ceasefire decision was made through direct military channels between India and Pakistan, without any external mediation (here, here).

For context, in November 2024, U.S. authorities filed both criminal and civil cases against Gautam Adani (here, here).

It is worth noting that Factly had previously published a fact-checking article when a similar claim went viral, alleging that ‘Bolta Hindustan’ had published a news graphic stating, as per US President Trump, Prime Minister Modi demanded the withdrawal of all cases against Adani in exchange for a ceasefire with Pakistan.

To sum it up, the viral claim that Elon Musk stated that Indian Prime Minister Modi agreed to the 2025 India–Pakistan ceasefire agreement to prevent the arrest of Indian industrialist Gautam Adani is false.
