Delhi CM Rekha Gupta didn’t buy a new car; the car in the viral video was used by former CMs as well

The Bharatiya Janata Party won the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, regaining power in the capital after 27 years. The party appointed Rekha Gupta as Delhi’s Chief Minister. Meanwhile, a video going viral on social media (here, here, and here) shows a high-end black car. The post is being shared with claims that Rekha Gupta had stated she would not spend on things like Sheesh Mahal but purchased a car worth ₹50 lakh for herself using taxpayers’ money immediately after becoming the CM. Let’s verify the claim made in the post through this article.

The archived post can be found here.

Claim: Rekha Gupta purchased a high-end black car worth ₹50 lakh after becoming the Delhi Chief Minister.

Fact: The high-end black car seen in the viral video was not purchased by Delhi CM Rekha Gupta after assuming office. The same vehicle was used by former Delhi CMs Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi Marlena, confirming that it is a government vehicle, purchased much before Rekha Gupta was sworn in as Delhi CM. The registration details show that it was registered in April 2022. Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

We noticed the IANS (Indo-Asian News Service) logo on the viral video. To trace its origin, we conducted a Google keyword search and found the same video posted on the IANS X handle on 20 February 2025. The video’s caption stated, “Delhi: CM security arrived to escort Rekha Gupta for the official proceedings.”

We found an X post by ANI dated 14 September 2024, featuring a video of the same car with the same registration number. The video shows then-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inside the vehicle. The post’s caption stated, “Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal leaves from the residence of AAP leader and former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia after holding a meeting with party leaders here.” This confirms that the current Delhi CM, Rekha Gupta, did not purchase this car. It was already with the Delhi government before she was elected as CM.

The car seen in the viral video is the same as the one used by then-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in September 2024. A comparison can be seen below.

We also found another video in an X post by ANI dated 09 February 2025, showing then-Delhi CM Atishi Marlena travelling in the same car. The post’s caption stated, “Delhi CM Atishi leaves from her residence. She will go to Raj Niwas to submit her resignation.” This was after the BJP emerged victorious in the Delhi Assembly Election 2025 on 08 February 2025, winning 48 out of 70 seats.

Upon searching the vehicle’s registration number on the “RTO VEHICLE INFORMATION” website, we found that it was registered on 22 April 2022. The vehicle is listed as an “MG Gloster.” This confirms that the car was not purchased in 2025 after the Delhi Assembly Elections.

We found multiple reports from July 2022 (here and here) citing an RTI, which revealed that the Delhi government had spent around ₹1.44 crore on vehicles for the Chief Minister. Around the same time, Arvind Kejriwal was seen in a new MG Gloster car worth ₹36 lakh.

According to an NDTV report (archived) dated 20 February 2025, which discusses the official residence and vehicle of the Delhi CM, a black car can be seen in the video with the same registration number as the one in the viral video. The report states that this car is a government vehicle assigned to the Delhi Chief Minister. The current Delhi CM was seen using the same car when she visited Vice President Dhankhar’s residence on 21 February 2025.

To sum up, the claim that Delhi CM Rekha Gupta purchased a high-end black car after assuming office is not true; it is a government vehicle used by former CMs since 2022.
