Maha Kumbh Mela is set to conclude on 26 February and devotees are still arriving for a holy dip at the Sangam. Amid this, a video (here and here) circulating on social media shows massive waves rushing toward the shore, causing people to run for safety as the waves crash violently. The claim suggests that this video is from the Maha Kumbh. Let’s find out the truth behind it.
Claim: The viral video showing powerful waves hitting the shore is from the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela.
Fact: The video was originally uploaded on 16 November 2024, on a Facebook page by Kapil Raj, an entertainment journalist at Sangri Times, who claimed it was from the Ganga. However, the Maha Kumbh Mela began on 13 January 2025 confirming that the video is not related to the Kumbh Mela. Hence, the claim is MISLEADING.
To verify the claim, we performed a reverse image search on Google, which led us to the original, slightly longer version of the viral clip. This video was uploaded on 16 November 2024 with the caption “Jai Ho Ganga Maiya Ki“, on a Facebook page named Kapil Raj, an entertainment Journalist at Sangri Times. In the extended version, we can see the person holding the camera turning it toward himself and saying “Jay Maiya Ganga.”
As the video was uploaded on 16 November 2024, and the Maha Kumbh Mela began on 13 January 2025, it is clear that the video is old and unrelated to the Kumbh. We have also contacted the video owner, Kapil Raj regarding details of this video. This article will be updated once he responds. Additionally, no reports were found of a similar incident occurring at the Maha Kumbh Mela.
To sum up, an old video is being shared as showing a strong wave hitting the shore during the Kumbh Mela.
