An old, unrelated video of a Dhaka College student is being falsely linked to the lynching of Hindu Youth Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh

A Bangladeshi Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, was brutally lynched and his body burnt on a highway in Mymensingh district on 18 December 2025, following rumours of insulting religious sentiments. Police and RAB officials have since stated that no evidence was found to support the blasphemy allegation. Several accused have been arrested and placed on remand as investigations continue. The killing has triggered widespread outrage in Bangladesh and abroad, with authorities condemning the act as mob violence and assuring strict action against those involved (here, here, and here).

Following the incident, a video is being shared on social media (here, here, and here) claiming that it shows Bangladeshi police handing over Dipu Chandra Das to extremists before his death. Let’s verify the claim made in the post in this article.

Claim: The video shows Bangladeshi police handing over Dipu Chandra Das to extremists before his death.

Fact: The viral video does not show Bangladeshi police handing over Dipu Chandra Das to extremists before his death. The visuals are from November 2025 and shows a Dhaka College student briefly detained by police in Dhaka, who was later released. The clip predates the Mymensingh lynching by several weeks. Hence, the claim made in the post is Misleading.

A reverse image search of keyframes from the viral video led us to the same clip uploaded by Bangladeshi news outlet Bhorer Kagoj on 18 November 2025, with the caption “What happened to this Dhaka College student?” This makes it clear that the video is not related to the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, as it predates the Mymensingh incident by nearly a month.

This version of the video contains additional footage that was clipped out of the viral clip, in which a police officer can be seen letting the man go. We also found another video of the same incident, recorded from a different angle and uploaded on the YouTube channel @dhakatoday_news. The video is titled “College student starts crying after being beaten up by police.” In both videos, the man is wearing a jersey with the name ‘Momin’ printed on the back.

We also found that the man was wearing a T-shirt with the Dhaka College logo on the left and “Session 2022–23” written on the right. We compared the logo visible on the T-shirt with the official Dhaka College logo and found them to be identical. The comparison can be seen below.

In an X post dated 22 December 2025, a Bangladeshi fact checker debunked the viral video, stating that it is being shared with a false claim.

To sum up, an old, unrelated video of a Dhaka College student is being falsely linked to the lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh.
