An old, unrelated turbulence video is being shared with the claim that it shows visuals captured just before the 12 June 2025 Ahmedabad plane crash

On 12 June 2025, Air India Flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad. The aircraft lost altitude within minutes and went down in the Meghani Nagar area near the airport, erupting in flames (here, here). It crashed into the hostel building of B.J. Medical College and Civil Hospital, which was reportedly housing medical students at the time. Over 240 people were on board, including nationals of India, the UK, Portugal, and Canada (here). Rescue and investigation efforts are ongoing, led by the DGCA, AAIB, and Air India.

Following the crash, a video circulating on social media (here and here) claims to show Air passengers clinging to their seats in fear just before the aircraft crashed in Ahmedabad on 12 June 2025. Let’s verify the truth behind the video in this article.

The archived post can be found here.

Claim: The video shows Air India passengers clinging to their seats in fear moments before the 12 June 2025 crash in Ahmedabad.

Fact: The viral video is unrelated to the 2025 Ahmedabad crash. It has been online since at least May 2022 and shows passengers experiencing severe turbulence aboard an Airbus A321. The Air India flight was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.  Hence, the claim made in the post is FALSE.

A reverse image search of the keyframes from the viral video led us to an Instagram post (archived) dated 28 September 2024, featuring the uncropped version of the same video. The caption reads, “Footage from inside an aeroplane as it goes through air turbulence.” This confirms the viral video predates the 12 June 2025 Ahmedabad plane crash.

Upon close review of the video, we observed the label ‘Airbus A321’ on the card attached to the back of the seat. Similar cards are visible on other seats as well. Therefore, we can reasonably infer that the aircraft shown in the video is an Airbus A321.

As per the reports (here and here), the plane that crashed in Ahmedabad on 12 June was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The aircraft was operating as Air India Flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, and not as an Airbus A321.

We also found a report published by the Daily Mail on 18 March 2023, which included a screenshot from the viral video. The report was titled “SHAKES on a plane! Passengers share videos of their most TERRIFYING turbulence experiences.” The Daily Mail stated, “This clip shared by @skytleea shows people holding on to the seats in front of them as they experience severe turbulence.” The username ‘@skytleea’ was hyperlinked to a TikTok post that has since been deleted.

In this process, we also found another TikTok post featuring the same video, dated 01 May 2022, with the caption: “It was the scariest plane I’ve ever flown in.” This confirms that the video has been on the internet since at least May 2022 and is unrelated to the June 2025 Ahmedabad plane crash.

However, we could not independently verify the exact date when the video was filmed. Nonetheless, based on the available evidence, it is clear that the video is unrelated to the June 2025 Ahmedabad plane crash.

To sum up, an old, unrelated turbulence video is being shared with the claim that it shows visuals captured just before the 12 June 2025 Ahmedabad plane crash.
